                                World Cup 2010    

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place between June 11 and July 11, 2010 in South    Africa. This will be the first time the tournament has been hosted by an African nation. South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt, in an all-African bidding process to win. Besides Egypt, Morocco and South Africa, Libya and Tunisia had also bid to host the event together.

 

Teams from 32 countries have qualified for the final tournament. Representing Africa, Algeria, Cameron, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and the host South Africa will participate. FIFA has selected 30 referees from different countries.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The The matches will take place in ten different venues. Five new stadiums have been built for the tournament, and five of the existing venues are upgraded. Construction costs are expected to be over R8.4bn (1.1 billion US). South Africa is also planning to improve its current transportation infrastructure. The country is also taking special measures to ensure the safety and security of local and international tourists attending the matches.

 

  The total prize money for the tournament will be $420 million. 60% increase from the 2006 tournament. Before the tournament, each participating team would receive $1 million, for preparation cost. Teams that make it to the Quarter finals will get $18 million, Semi-finals $20 million, Runners-up $24 million and Winners $30 million. For the first time in World Cup’s history there will also be payments made to the domestic clubs of the players representing their national teams. The official mascot of the World Cup is a leopard with green hair named “Zakumi”. The official match ball will named “Jabulani”, made by Adidas, which means “bringing joy to everyone”
